It seems simple, we breathe without thought all day long, but when we sit down to complete a breathing exercise or meditation it’s like we suddenly forget what to do!
Here is a quick breathing exercise you can use anytime to help calm the nervous system, increase focus, and reduce stress:
Sit comfortably with your back straight.
Breathe through your nose for a count of four.
Hold for a count of four.
Exhale through your mouth for a count of four, being sure to push as much air as you can while contracting your abdominal muscles.
Continue this cycle until you feel your body relax.
As you begin to master this breathing exercise, try to extend the time you are in this practice. Not only will this help to reduce stress and calm your nervous system, but it helps to increase focus by learning to become aware of the present moment.
Happy Breathing!
