Aftercare That Actually Helps After Therapeutic Massage Sessions

Massage is what happens on the table. Results are what happens after. Here’s the aftercare I recommend most often for therapeutic work—especially deep tissue, TMJ-focused sessions, and Sarga barefoot massage.

First: what you feel after is information

A little tenderness or ‘worked’ feeling can be normal. Sharp pain, numbness, or symptoms that escalate fast are not. When in doubt, reach out.

The 24-hour basics

  • Drink water like a normal human (no need to chug).

  • Take a gentle walk or do light movement to keep things integrating.

  • Skip intense workouts if you feel tender—choose mobility instead.

  • Warmth helps most people (shower, heating pad). Use ice if something feels inflamed.

For deep tissue or Sarga sessions

  • Expect your body to ‘reorganize’ for 24–48 hours—especially if we changed a long-standing pattern.

  • Do 2–3 minutes of slow breathing (long exhale) to keep your nervous system in ‘let go’ mode.

  • If you’re sore: heat + gentle stretching beats aggressive foam rolling.

For TMJ work (including intraoral)

  • Avoid chewy foods/gum for the rest of the day if your jaw is tender.

  • Try a warm compress on the jaw/cheeks for 5–10 minutes.

  • Keep your tongue resting on the roof of your mouth and lips closed (jaw relaxed).

  • Notice clenching triggers: driving, screens, stress, workouts—awareness is half the win.

When to book again

If we’re working on a specific issue (jaw tension, headaches, chronic shoulder/hip patterns), consistency matters more than intensity. I’ll usually recommend a short series first, then maintenance.

Want me to suggest an aftercare plan based on your last session? Tell me what we worked on and how you felt the next day.
