How to Choose the Right Massage Modality for Your Body (Swedish, Deep Tissue, Sarga & TMJ Focus)

If you’ve ever booked a massage and thought, ‘I don’t know what to pick—Swedish? Deep tissue? Something more specific?’ you’re not alone. At The Pushy Goat, we treat modalities like tools. The right choice depends on your goals, your nervous system, and what your body is asking for right now.

Start with your goal

  • I want to relax and sleep better.

  • I’m sore/tight and want targeted relief.

  • I have jaw tension, clenching, headaches, or neck pain.

  • I want deep work but I don’t want to feel ‘stabby’ pressure.

Quick guide: which modality fits?

Swedish massage

Best for stress relief, circulation, and easing you into bodywork—especially if you’re new or feeling ‘wired and tired.’ Swedish can still be therapeutic; it’s just a different lever (nervous system + flow) than heavy pressure.

Therapeutic deep tissue

Best for stubborn tension patterns, restricted movement, and areas that feel ‘stuck.’ Deep tissue should feel like productive pressure—not a fight. We work with your breath and feedback so your body can actually let go.

Sarga barefoot massage

Best when you want broad, slow, deeply melting pressure—especially for hips, legs, back, and dense tissue. Sarga uses a strap system for control and consistency, which often makes deep work feel more comfortable than pointy elbow pressure.

TMJ-focused work (including intraoral)

Best for jaw clenching, clicking, facial tension, headaches, and neck/shoulder tightness that keeps coming back. TMJ work can include intraoral techniques (inside the mouth) in 60- or 90-minute sessions when appropriate and with clear consent.

What to tell me when you book (so I can customize)

  • Your #1 goal for the session (relaxation, pain relief, headache help, jaw tension, mobility).

  • Where you feel it most (and what makes it worse).

  • Pressure preferences—and what you’ve hated in past massages.

  • Any clenching/grinding, dental work, orthodontics, or headaches.

  • How you want to feel walking out the door.

Not sure? Book ‘therapeutic’ and we’ll decide together

If you’re torn between Swedish, deep tissue, Sarga, or TMJ focus, choose the session length you want and tell me your goals. We’ll build the right blend for your body that day.

Ready when you are—your body doesn’t need a perfect label, it needs the right approach.
